The more I explore color, pattern and shape the further I get from the circle I started with. These slab earrings aren’t a perfect match, they are hand-cut, free form shapes, having different curves and angles. The color patterns also vary from earring to earring just as lichen patterns vary from rock to rock on the trail.

The base color is a medium grey, like the color of rocks I trample over in the Granite State. These slabs have orange, black and green lichen. I made these after a backpacking trip and was inspired by the photos I took trying to recreate the patterns of lichen and how the different colors interacted on the rock’s surface. The back of the earrings have a satin finish, like a hazy sky seen from a summit. The slabs are about 5/8" across and 7/8" long, including the ear wire they dangle about 1.75" long.

Granite slab earrings are the start of a grand adventure. They are where jewelry making and hiking finally merged. I took my memory of the trail to my bench and recreated the beauty I see in the wild. I look forward to hiking more and sharing how I see the trails with you in the form of jewelry.

thanks for being awesome and buying handmade, kim
